Small Business of the Year (21+ employees)

This award goes to a business with 21 and more employees that has delivered a high level of customer satisfaction overall

The business that won this award is dedicated to customer satisfaction.  In voting people wrote “The best service bar none! Truly a great asset to the Sundre area.”   ;  “[They] consistently deliver first class customer service. All the store personnel are friendly and polite. … I requested a certain item to be brought in, they did it for me so I didn’t have to shop elsewhere.”  ;  “Always helpful staff” ;  “great customer service, great department management.” ;  and “great customer service, friendly management.”

The Award goes to Sundre Sobeys, owner Marty Mennear

Rookie Business of the Year

This award goes to a business of any size that delivers a high level of customer satisfaction but was started in 2010 or later

While this business team has been around for several years, it is being recognized for opening up a new storefront location. It has given Sundre a new and unique place to eat. Comments from the nominations were: “[They] offer a unique western homemade eating experience.” ;  and “Great food, great service and willingness to expand and try new items at any given time.”

The Rookie Business of the Year Award goes to Kodiak BBQ & Deli

Employer of the Year

The nomination for this business said, “Although I have only worked for them for 9 months, this family oriented business is a wonderful environment to work in, and they are great people to work for.”

The Employer of the Year Award goes to Jeff & Laurel Botheras from Delson’s Enterprises and Cooters Transportation Systems

Employee of the Year

This award goes to an employee who demonstrates overall commitment to excellence

While there were many nominations for this award, the winner stood out because of comments like this: “Always happy. Great server.” ; “Her caring personality makes you feel great and the service she provided was amazing!” ; “Great service every time! Always happy and always remembers my name.” ;  and “Incredibly welcoming and so friendly; always a smile.”

The Employee of the Year is Jobelle Palalay from Trendies

Spirit of Sundre

This award goes to the business that gives back to the community through donations of time, effort, in-king contributions and/or money

Local businesses not only employ local people and provide services to the local community; they give back to the community through generous donations of time, effort and money. This award winner is an excellent example of that. They donated their expertise to the building of the Sundre Skatepark this year. Some quotes from their nominations: “[They] donated above and beyond…” ; “Donated generously in time, equipment and funds…” ; and “[They are] an example of excellence in community support – the skatepark is just one example.”

The Spirit of Sundre Award goes to Al Saunders Contracting & Consulting

Sundre Shines

This award goes to the business that makes the best effort to maintain and beautify their storefront/building/lot

Sundre is a nice looking town because businesses in the area make an effort to beautify their locations. Many businesses were nominated, but the winner is a group that works hard to manage and maintain the property so that the thousands of visitors every year will be impressed. The comments in the nominations were “Excellent team of volunteers to participate in planting flowers, mowing grass, shovelling snow.” ; “Everything around the village and 4 acres area looks great.” ; “Staff and volunteers ‘go all out’ to keep the museum and their outdoor area attractive and welcoming.”

The Sundre Shines Award goes to the Sundre Museum

These awards are made possible through the generous support of our sponsors.

Top Ten Reasons to Shop Local First!

Sundre has some beautiful, unique, professional businesses unlike any other, with customer service to match. Consider shopping local when you need a product or service for your home or business — check within the Chamber membership first to see who is here to serve you!

10.  Public Benefits and Costs

Local stores require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services relative to big box stores and strip shopping malls.

9.   Local Decision Making

Local ownership means that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.

8.  Local Businesses Risk a Lot

Our local retailers bought their stock six months ago hoping to sell it today, pay their employees, pay their taxes, heat and hydro, donate to charity, and hopefully pay themselves. YOU and members of your family may be some of those employees who may be looking for that paycheck.

7.  Get Better Service

The people of Sundre are very friendly and want to give you the best they have. After all, they know you might be their neighbour, and it’s not wise to do wrong by your neighbour.

6.  Support Community Businesses and They Support Us

The well‐being of a community benefits when you shop locally. Our area businesses build strong neighbourhoods by sustaining communities, contributing to local charities, supporting sports teams, service clubs, school activities and more.

5.  Jobs and Wages

Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.

4.  Preserve Our Character and Prosperity

Sundre is unique. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help maintain Sundre’s culture and distinctive ambiance.

3.  Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship fuels Canada’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to adequately support themselves and in turn be able to give back to the community.

2.  Respect Mother Nature

Reduce your environmental footprint and save money at the same time. You’re not burning fuel and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

1.  More Money STAYS Local

When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the community tax base, easing our own personal tax commitments.
